Not to by snarky, but including the Kore-eda in this is an insult to a masterpiece (Resnais) and a great ditty (Oliveira). That being said, there is a lot of very unresolved issues in the Kore-eda that makes it an object of curiosity. Also, it is shot by Mark Lee Pin-bing.
I think it's less about the relative worth of Air Doll, and elevating Koreeda's stature overall. What it is is he should have been in Masters a while ago, and certainly last year with Still Walking.
I've never quite understood what qualifies a director as a "master." Looking over the lists of the past few years, you'll find an odd collection, including several names I'd never heard before.
Looks like the Resnais is out, since it's opening the NYFF. Seriously bummed-out, since it sounds amazing...
Has there been an official announcement to that effect?
Apparently the NYFF rule has changed. Cameron Bailey tweeted the other day that the Resnais film will be at TIFF.
I offer some critical synopses at The Evening Class.
It appears Eccentricities is off the final list? I was looking to see if it was shifted to another program; but, haven't been able to determine anything.
Michael, the Oliveira IS still on the schedule, and it's being paired with his 1931 film, Working on the Douro River, which played in Wavelengths in '05.
